What is Health?

Letitia McDougall

Feb 8, 2023

Traditional definitions of health state it is the absence of disease? The articles and sources below are ones I have used in my recent blog post to update and reframe the definitions of health.

“Toward a Contemporary Definition of Health” challenges the archaic notion health simply remains the absence of disease and incorporating the need for quality of life as a dynamic process.

I found Dr. Brooks editorial piece “Should the Definition of Health include a Measure of Tolerance” thought provoking. It challenged my own conceptual ideas of “health” by introducing me to the concept of teaching acceptance and tolerance as a foundation toward a “healthy” community.

The aim of this review article is to complete a literature review related to the definition of healthcare along with the creation of standards of care internationally comparing similarities and differences.

This chapter describes how the fall of the Iron Curtain at the end of the Cold War led to the striking of several European working groups aimed at reforming the original WHO concept of “health”.
